Needing A Push-Start

Herb Jackson served as a missionary in a developing nation for several years. He was assigned a vehicle by the mission agency, but upon receiving it, discovered that it wouldn't start. For two years, he push-started the car each morning by "borrowing" some boys from the local school to give it a shove. Then he would make his rounds for the day...always parking on a hill or leaving the engine running. 

Due to ill health, Jackson's family needed to return home to the States. When his replacement arrived, Herb was showing the young man around, and explained the issue with the auto. The newcomer probed around under the hood a few minutes and said, "Well Dr. Jackson, I believe the only problem is this loose cable." Giving the cable a twist, the engine roared to life, much to the astonishment of Dr. Jackson. (Source: Pastor's Story File, Vol.15, Number 8)

Imagine that! The power was present, but Jackson failed to utilize it. In similar ways, many of us limp our way through life much like Herb's car. Followers of Jesus are promised full access to the unlimited power of the Creator of the Universe. Ephesians 3:20 informs us that God "is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us." God's infinite power is available to those who ask and believe (Eph.1:19; 3:7, 16, 18). Yet we often settle for a mediocre existence, like an old vehicle requiring a push start! That's NOT the life God has called his children to live! Sure, we're going to face bitter struggles, and endure harsh pain. But we need to live out of a place of victory, standing on the promises of God! So often we don’t have what we want, because we don’t ask God for it. (James 4:2)

What's the solution? Stay connected to Jesus. He promises in John 15:5"If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit." It's the same story. The power is available for a branch to bear fruit...if it's connected to the vine. The power is available for an engine to start...if it's connected to the battery. And the power is available to us...if we stay connected to Jesus!
