EGGY-WEGGY

One afternoon I volunteered to pick up two of my grandchildren from school. I dragged along their three-year-old brother, Olin, who all day long had been toting a worthless plastic toy, which he affectionately dubbed “Eggy-Eggy.” I strapped Olin into his car seat and drove to the school. That’s when a tragedy of immense proportion occurred—he dropped Eggy Weggy. Every two seconds, Olin wailed inconsolably, “Eggy-Weggy.” When we arrived at the school, his brother Liam rescued Eggy-Weggy from the floorboard of my truck, and peace was restored to the galaxy.

Sighing in relief, I thought how ridiculous it was for Olin to get so worked up over a worthless piece of plastic. Then it dawned on me. Our world abounds with Eggy-Weggies, and I cling to them as passionately as Olin did.

Eggy-Weggies can be possessions, prosperity, pleasure, power, or popularity. Perhaps it’s owning a Corvette convertible or writing a best-selling novel (two of my Eggy-Weggies). But they all have this in common: they’re empty and cannot fulfill us. No matter how cool or expensive they are, or how much we think we can’t live without them.

As strange as it sounds, Eggy-Weggy points us to the cross. Prior to Calvary, humanity eked out a meaningless existence (see Ecclesiastes 1:2). But because of the cross and the empty tomb, life explodes with purpose—preparing us for an eternity of joy. Christ’s sacrifice transports us from the realm of eternal death into eternal life, from a black-and-white film to one than comes alive in technicolor.

This is why Paul closed the book of Galatians with these words: “As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died” (6:14 NLT). No matter how many Eggy-Weggies I cling to, the cross is all that matters. Laid alongside the cross and the empty tomb, my dearest Eggy Weggy is a worthless piece of plastic. Nothing else has significance. Only embracing the cross of Jesus will fulfill our deepest longings.

At some point, the memory of Eggy-Weggy faded from Olin’s prefrontal cortex. His precious possession is now laid to rest under a thousand tons of trash in the Sonoma County landfill. I’m confident my most beloved Eggy-Weggy will suffer the same fate. As Peter states, one day “the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:10). But what Jesus accomplished on the cross endures forever.

Principle: Compared to the cross and the empty tomb, nothing else matters.

Ponder:

  • What Eggy-Weggies do you tend to cling to for fulfillment?

  • How can you find your fulfillment in the cross of Jesus and the empty tomb?

Pursue: For a deeper dive, study 2 Peter 3.

Lord Jesus, you are all I need. Yet I find myself so easily pulled away by the Eggy-Weggies of this world. Please turn my focus back to you and the salvation Jesus brought me through his death on the cross.
