MOTHER MARY COMES TO ME

In 1969, Paul McCartney found himself "in times of trouble." The Beatles were on the verge of dissolving, and only Paul was motivated to keep the legendary band together. In the midst of deep isolation and rejection, McCartney found comfort in the form of a dream. As he slept, his mother Mary (who had died when McCartney was 10), came to him, speaking "words of wisdom". The essence of her message was "Let it be". Don't fight it; accept what's happening.

Paul McCartney awoke to "the sound of music" and wrote the classic hit "Let it Be". It was destined to be the last single the Beatles released prior to breaking up, and their last number one song in the U.S. Perhaps you assumed, as did I, that "Mother Mary" referred to the mother of Jesus. Not so. Stirred by his artistic nature, McCartney left the song open to interpretation. In a later interview, he acknowledged that his mum's message was "very reassuring", providing the hope he needed at that moment. (Source: beatlesbible.com)

"Let...it...be". Such a simple phrase. It's not especially profound. (unless it's spoken by your dead mother!) But it's truth is timeless. Some of the best known "refrigerator magnet verses" herald this theme. Consider Psalms 46:10"Be still and know that I am God." Then there's Isaiah 40:31"They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength." Or how about "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5). In a sense, these spiritual gems could be summed up with that singular phrase, "Let...it...be". Whether Paul McCartney's dream was real or imagined, I'll let you decide. But know this: Whatever you're going through right now, God continually reassures us through His Word, reminding us, when you find yourself in times of trouble, trust in Him and "Let...it...be."
