I-PHONES IN THE BIBLE

Imagine you're on a tour of the pyramids in Egypt. Wandering away from your group, you trip over something. Stooping down, you pull away the sand and discover it's a pointed rock. Eventually, your guide joins you, and in shock declares, "You have discovered an unknown pyramid, hidden from civilization for thousands of years!" Teams of archaeologists swarm to the spot, and begin uncovering it. The big day arrives when the newly discovered pyramid is unveiled, and you're invited to be the first to enter. 

As the door swings open, you behold a mummy, clay tablets, papyrus scrolls, an I-Phone, and...Wait a minute! How did an I-Phone get inside a pyramid that's been buried for thousands of years? That technology couldn't have been known. Either everyone's "being punked" or some outside force must have placed it in there. (Adapted from I'm So Sure, Jeff Walling)

As incredible as it seems, I'm holding a book, thousands of years old, that's crammed full of "I-Phones". The Bible is replete with statements that shouldn't be found in its pages; scientific facts which weren't discovered for thousands of years! For instance, Isaiah 40:22 states that the earth is round. How could this be known when these words were penned over 2,700 years ago? All other cultures believed the world was flat. 

Job 26:7 declares the earth is unsupported. Written around 1200 BC, it states simply, "He hangs the earth upon nothing." Ancient civilizations clung to a myriad of myths as to how our planet is supported in space. The Greeks claimed that Atlas held up the earth. The ancient Japanese taught it was on the back of a coy fish, swimming in a cosmic sea. The Hindus believed that the four corners of the earth rested on the backs of four elephants, all standing atop a giant turtle. Yet God's word contains none of that nonsense. In fact, it affirms a modern scientific fact nearly 3000 years before it was discovered! How do you explain it? 

Dozens and dozens of such "I-Phones" abound in Scripture. The water-vapor cycle, weather patterns, ocean currents, food contamination, quarantine for communicable disease...the list goes on and on. On several occasions, the Bible was even used to guide men in scientific discoveries. Isn't this what we'd expect in a book claiming to originate in the mind of God? 

Here's why this matters. You can have confidence in the Bible, because its author is God. You can trust what it says and build your life on what it teaches. That's really good news in our world of shifting sand, where nothing is dependable. It is the foundation for a successful life. And to prove it, God placed I-Phones all through the Bible!
