RUSHING THROUGH LIFE

"Fixing our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:2)

Hailing a taxi, Professor Julian Huxley climbed inside. He was late for a critical meeting at a convention of scientists in Ireland. “Drive fast,” he told the cabby. “I am in a great hurry.” The driver took off at breakneck speed, swerving through the streets. Agitated, Huxley asked, “Do you know where I want to go?”

“No gov’nor. You didn’t tell me where to go, but I am driving fast!”

We’ve probably all found ourselves in a similar situation. As we rush through life, trying to accomplish the next thing on our lists, it’s easy to lose track of where we're going. At times we wonder, "What's the purpose of it all? What’s the point of all our pursuits? Where am I headed?" Like spinning tires, we create lots of activity with little action. Without a specific goal, we’re fulfilling the time-worn proverb, “If you aim at nothing you’ll hit it.”

When we’re confused about our target, focus on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). His purpose was clear. “Whatever the Father does, the Son also does” (John 5:19). In searching for the meaning of life, Solomon concluded, “Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

That’s it. “Doing God’s will” pretty much sums up why we’re on this planet. Of course, that takes on all kinds of forms. God works through each of us according to our unique design. Every morning, it's critical to re-center on our purpose; to remind ourselves of where we're going today. Get alone with the Lord, calm your mind and focus on doing His will this day. Open your daily planner and ask, "What's it look like for me to do God's will on my job, with my family, at the grocery store...?" Then ask Him to enable you to live in an awareness of His Presence all through the day.

Being busy and rushing at times, is a given. But we don't need to get lost in the chase like Professor Huxley. Knowing where we’re going is critical when we're stuck in the fast lane of life.

  • What is my target in life?

  • How can I come back to that target when I find myself rushing each day?

Lord Jesus, as I go through my day, remind me of my purpose: to do the Father's will.
