THE FOG OF FEAR
Driving in fog is not only dangerous, it can be downright deadly. A blanket of vapor can force traffic to a standstill, grind business to a halt, and even shut down airports. According to the National Bureau of Standards, a dense fog covering seven city blocks to a depth of 100 feet is comprised of approximately 60 billion tiny droplets. Yet if all those droplets were brought together, they would fill less than one glass of water! Isn't it amazing how a cup of water can cripple a city.
That got me thinking. How often do I empower "60 billion water droplets" to consume my thinking and steal my peace? Especially when it amounts to nothing more than a cup of water! Certainly major tsunamis come crashing into our lives: divorce, cancer, addiction... But that's an entirely different "weather system." We’re referring to the simple day-to-day concerns that we grossly enlarge, ravaging one’s psyche like a horde of Huns.
"The fog of fear" obscures our vision and distorts our perspective. When we find ourselves overwhelmed with a barrage of tiny droplets, ask, "How much does this really matter?" Will I even remember this a month from now (or even in a day)? We fuss and fret over a host of teeny troubles when a billion souls on our planet are starving to death!
How do we deal with the “fog of fear” when it creeps into our lives? By looking to Jesus. Driving through a fog, the sun still shines above the fog line. Likewise, in the throes of a spiritual fog, we are confident that The Son shines on us as well. In Psalms 94:19 King David wrote, "Whenever my busy thoughts were out of control, the soothing comfort of your presence calmed me down and overwhelmed me with delight." When those tiny droplets of fear fall on our hearts, pause and take a deep breath. As you exhale say, “Lord, I give everything and everybody to you.” The fog in your heart will evaporate. Don’t allow the "fog of fear" to block the Son-shine from our lives.
What "tiny water droplets" am I allowing to steal my joy?
When I feel "fogged in," what steps can I take to allow the "Son-shine" to burn brightly once again?
Lord Jesus, reveal to me those worries and concerns which are creating a fog in my life. Please flood my heart with your light and burn away the fog.
