ZORRO AND JESUS

He was my first hero. His mask hid his identity. His swordsmanship was unparalleled. He could flip from a second- story window, and land perfectly on his black stallion. His trademark was slashing a Z in wood, stone, or whatever was available. Zorro.

I was so enraptured by the masked champion that my folks gave me a Zorro outfit for my fifth birthday, complete with cape, mask and sword. A piece of chalk occupied the tip, for marking Zs. I quickly replaced the chalk with a crayon, to leave a permanent mark, just like my swashbuckling idol. I moved through the house, making my presence known. I marked the walls, furniture, even my sister’s dolls. I knew I’d get in trouble, but some triumphs are worth the cost. And cost me it did. I was banned from watching Zorro for two weeks.

We all long for some hero to deliver us from the injustice and confusion of this world. Today’s films reflect this yearning. The bulk of them contain some aspect of the supernatural. Why? Because it is our deepest desire. We were created for more than this world, and our hearts ache for a hero who can supernaturally deliver us.

This weekend, we’re celebrating the supernatural deliverance Jesus provides through His death and resurrection. In Revelation 1:18 Jesus declares, “I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.” He gave His life on the cross to free us from the bondage of sin, and conquered death by rising from the dead. Now that's a hero we can rely on!

For the first time in history, our world has literally shut down. Our very core is shaken with uncertainty, whether through pandemics, politics or the loss of prosperity. We need supernatural deliverance. More than ever, we pine for something rock-solid which never changes. The love of God, demonstrated through the death of Jesus endures forever. Don’t look to Zorro or the plethora of Marvel heroes. Look to the One who created all things, who died for His creation, triumphed over death and now lives forever.

This Sunday, check out a church via the internet. My church, Santa Rosa Christian, hosts services live online. Tune in and discover the One who can truly deliver us...Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
