MOVING A-HEAD

In 2015, an Italian doctor claimed he could perform a human head transplant within two years.  Dr. Sergio Canavero, a neuroscientist from Turin told leading doctors that he had begun initial preparations, and even had a volunteer. Two years later, he alleged to have made good on his claim, boasting he had successfully “realized the first human head transplant.” That sounds amazing – until we add one tiny detail… it was performed on a corpse!  That last piece of information changes things, doesn’t it?

The scientific community isn’t exactly racing to embrace Dr. Canavero. “Skeptical” doesn’t begin to describe their attitude. Besides medical hurdles, huge ethical concerns must be overcome. Many doubt the good doctor’s motives. But if you ask me, he's just trying to "stay ahead" of the competition!

Reading this, my mind flashed to images of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein.  Sure, we’ve made huge advancements in medicine, but jumping over the moon, might be easier to achieve than a head transplant.  Biblically, understanding that we each possess a unique spirit created in God's image, presents insurmountable obstacles.

But in a sense, scripture teaches that in following Jesus, God gives us a "head transplant." He renews our mind. It's a process, but a reality nonetheless.  Ephesians 4:23 tells us that in becoming more like Jesus, "there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes" (or a "head transplant"). Romans 12:2 instructs us to "let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think."

During these times, it’s critical we embrace this truth. So many are freaking out over what’s going on in our world. It’s time for “brain surgery.” Our old thought patterns of anxiety and fear need to be cut off and “transplanted” with a new “brain” dominated by faith and courage. Despair and hopelessness must be removed and replaced with our new “mind,” of hope and peace. Anger makes way for compassion. And on and on. Our Father is the Master Surgeon and he never makes mistakes. As good “patients,” our part is focusing on things that are “true…noble…pure…holy” (Philippians 4:8). We can start by not obsessing on the news.

“Head transplants" are nothing new. God successfully performs them every day. And be assured He always “operates” out of love for us. As for Dr. Canavero, he needs $15 million to accomplish this medical breakthrough.  Anyone care to donate?

Principle: Our times call for a change in our thoughts and attitudes

Promise: “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

Ponder:

  • What old ways of thinking do I wish to be free from, and replace with a new mindset?

  • What attitudes and behaviors do I need to let go of, to partner with God in his surgery?

Prayer: Lord, you are the Master Surgeon. Open my mind to receive your life-changing surgery.

Pursue: For a deeper dive, study Ephesians 4:17-32.

Perceptions: Record any ideas God puts on your heart from today’s devotional through art, poetry, a memory, etc.
