A COURTHOUSE IN OHIO
A small courthouse in Ohio at one time reportedly occupied an unusual spot of ground. Situated at the fork of two rivers, raindrops falling on the north side of the building ran into Lake Ontario, eventually ending up in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in Canada. Precipitation landing on the south side flowed into the Mississippi River, ultimately finding its way to the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans. At precisely the point of the roof’s peak, just a gentle puff of wind determined the destiny of a single raindrop... a difference of more than 2,000 miles. (Source: Our Daily Bread, 6/12/1994)
At times, our choices are like those raindrops. Some of our decisions can have a huge impact on future generations. In my case, a man named John Henry Jenkins (my great-grandfather) made a choice to follow Jesus over 100 years ago. That decision not only affects me, but even my grandchildren, who have said "yes" to Jesus. A single choice, affecting the destiny of generations. Potentially, even my great-grandchildren’s great-grandchildren could continue his legacy. Psalm 78:6 speaks of our actions influencing “generations yet to be born.”
Moses' final words to the Israelites challenged them to "choose life", rather than death (Deut.30:19). Seems like a "no-brainer,” yet some folks wrestle with this choice regularly. Linda and I lead a weekly Bible study at a sober living house. Every day, residents literally face life-or-death choices. "Am I going to continue in recovery, or choose to use again?" Even if they're not aware, the impact of their choice affects generations yet unborn! Lives are saved, hearts are healed, and relationships are restored... from one simple choice.
Besides these life-altering macro decisions, we also face day-to-day micro choices—such as entertainment selections for our family. Or perhaps allowing negative attitudes to creep into our minds—jealousy, anger, or resentment. Sometimes, a hasty word or action create consequences lasting a lifetime. Like tiny raindrops blown in the wrong direction, these can eventually consume our souls. These small choices, set us on a different trajectory, creating an alternate timeline for our lives.
The good news is a changed commitment can also reverse a bad choice—breaking the cycle of addiction; restoring a broken relationship; or returning to Jesus. Have no doubt; the consequences of our choices are huge, one way or another… like raindrops on a courthouse in Ohio.

Ponder:
What choices are you making which could have a lasting effect, even after you’re gone?
What negative habits do I need to let go of, which might have a negative influence on those coming behind me.
Pursue: For a deeper dive, study Psalm 78:1-7.
Prayer: “Dear God, remind me of the importance of choices I make each day—in my thoughts, words, and actions.”
