HEARING GOD'S VOICE
On my first trip to India, my wife, Linda, called each morning. It was the longest time we had ever been apart, and just hearing her voice helped me make it through each day. Sometimes we failed to connect, and I felt weighed down all day, like carrying a backpack full of rocks. I counted the hours until my wife’s call the next morning.
When we spoke, just the sound of her voice energized me all day. Bouncing along rough roads, I replayed each word of our morning conversation. Preaching in sweltering heat, I meditated on the stories Linda had shared. Drifting off to sleep at night, I anticipated her next call. Linda’s voice carried me through the lonely moments of our month apart.
Likewise, the voice of Jesus brings strength during our troubled times. Psalm 95:7 challenges us to “listen to God’s voice!” Jesus declares that “my sheep hear my voice” (John 10:27). Just as hearing Linda’s voice made a huge difference in my day, a word from Jesus encourages us, like a fresh drink of cool water in scorching heat.
For me, hearing God’s voice isn’t an audible sound. It’s more of a deep inner sense of his peaceful presence, or a comforting thought. At times, he speaks in specific words that arise from his Spirit deep within me—usually ideas I would never have thought of on my own. Or it may be a scritpure that the Holy Spirit quickens within my heart.
Hearing God’s voice isn’t always easy. Slowing down and removing the distractions of our busy world is essential. The lines of communication are always open, and God’s voice is a soothing balm for our weary and discouraged hearts.
Whatever you’re experiencing right now—stress, worry, fear, or loneliness—slow down and listen for the comforting words of Jesus. Find a quiet spot. Dismiss the distractions and bombardments of busy thoughts, and listen for the voice of God. I promise, it will change your day. In 1998, the phone service was sketchy at best in our spot of India. Even when we connected, Linda’s voice wasn’t always clear. But with God, you’ll always be able to get through. His voice has the power to change our pain to peace.
