JESUS FOR PRESIDENT

I have a friend, who in every Presidential election, casts a write-in ballot… for Jesus. He literally writes the name “Jesus” on the ballot. My friend explained, that as a citizen of God’s kingdom, Jesus is his ruler. While I agree with his motives, I’m not sure it serves his intended purpose. But that got me thinking. In a sense I always vote for Jesus for President. And I’m doing the same in this election. Let me explain.

When we consider the personalities and demeanor of the two men running for the highest office in our land, like many others, there are attributes I dislike about both. More than once, I’ve found myself shaking my head in disgust at some of the comments emanating from each of their mouths.

While there are qualities I like and dislike about both candidates, “liking” or “disliking” is largely irrelevant in who I vote for. I’m not casting my ballot for who I like or who I think is the “nicest guy” of the two. I’m voting based on the issues— what the two candidates each stand for. In short, I’m voting for Jesus, and the principles that matter to Him.

The value of life ranks as number one, because as our Creator, that’s what Jesus is all about (Psalm 139:13). The Right to Life is a “deal-breaker” for me with any candidate, whether in the womb or the birthing room. Our freedom to worship uninhibited, along with a multitude of other liberties are important to the Lord, and to me. Righteousness, justice and truth are of immense concern to consider when we cast our ballot, regardless of which candidate we select. Each of us must start with the issues we believe are important. Then vote for who we think matches them.

If I needed brain surgery, and could choose between two doctors, I wouldn’t select one simply because I liked him more than the other. It would be based on who was gifted to best save my life— who could accomplish my overall purpose. I think you get the point.

“Vote your values” is a time-worn cliché. But it’s true. I’ve made my choice. I voted last week and marked the name of one of the two major candidates for President on my ballot. But I didn’t vote for either of those men. I voted for The One who stands for what I believe in. Jesus for President.
